We all hate Internet Explorer 6 because the lack of support for CSS and the security issues it has. The browser is 7 year old and dated, but is still used by too many people.

Before we are finally ready to make our websites only work in the modern browsers, we have to deal with this problem. One solution could be the IE7.js JavaScript library.

What is the IE7.js JavaScript library?

IE7.js is a JavaScript library to make Internet Explorer 6 behave like Internet Explorer 7, a more modern browser. This library fixes many CSS and HTML issues developers are constantly trying to deal with.

What bugs does IE7.js fix?

Many CSS properties are supported by most modern browsers but not by IE6: IE7.js solve these problems. IE7.js also fixes many IE6 bugs that annoyed us from day one. Here are the most important ones:

CSS Selectors

parent > child

.multiple.classes

:hover

:first-child

[attr]

[attr="value"], [attr~="value"], [attr|="value"], [attr^="value"], [attr$="value"]

[attr*="value"]

CSS

Background-image - PNG alpha transparency (IE5.5+)

Background-attachment - Support fixed positioning

Position - Support fixed positioning

Margin - Support auto (IE5.x)

Cursor - Support pointer for IE5.x

Display - Convert list-item to block for IE5.x

HTML

img - PNG alpha transparency

abbr - Bug fixed

How to implant this library to your website?

Yes I am sure you are. Next we will implant the library into your website. You can do that by adding this code between the <head></head> tags.

<!--[if lt IE 7]>
<script src="http://ie7-js.googlecode.com/svn/version/2.0(beta3)/IE7.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<![endif]-->

It sounds to good to be true, right?

There is only one real disadvantage of this library. Like any other JavaScript script, it won’t work unless JavaScript is activated on the computer of the user.

The change exists that IE6 users have turned off JavaScript because of the security risks IE6 has. And if that’s the problem, IE7.js won’t work, and so won’t the features you have implanted.

With the result your website might not show correctly on these computers. So, you still have to make sure your website works in IE6 if Javascript is turned down and that doesn’t solve the whole IE6-hate-thing.

Further reading and links

If you want more information about this JavaScript library, be sure to visit the following links:

The IE8.js file

I decided to focus this article on IE7.js because that solves the most common bug fixes a normal developer would require and because Internet Explorer 8 is still in BETA. If you decide to use the IE8.js file instead of the IE7.js file, here’s how to do that:

<!--[if lt IE 8]>
<script src="http://ie7-js.googlecode.com/svn/version/2.0(beta3)/IE8.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<![endif]-->

Note: You don’t need to include the IE7.js if you are using IE8.js.

We have been talking about and introducing great CSS typography alternatives like sIFR3, FLIR or Typeface.js. They have given us more typography possibilities and options.

When we use a technique like FLIR, we face another problem: where to get fonts for your projects.

Many quality fonts are copyrighted and that means you have to pay to use them. I could understand that you don’t want to buy (could be for any reason), so you would like an alternative like free fonts. But do they have quality, and how do you know which one is in the public domain?

How and Where to search?

I have picked up a small little trick that made me browse fonts that were in the public domain or are free to use. We will use DaFont to search and download fonts. Here is small guide:

Browse to DaFont.

Choose your font category.

Choose the options you would like to specify.

Click “more options”

Select Public domain / GNU GPL and Free

Browse the fonts.

10 Quality and Free Fonts

To make things as easy as possible, here are 10 fonts that I think are really nice. You can use any of them in sIFR3, FLIR or Typeface.js as long as you don’t sell them.

Port Credit

Very nice looking font that you can use in many projects. The download comes with 2 font files, a normal and a bold version.

I have been developing on the internet for some time now and I have owned multiple sites online. These sites all had their own custom design developed by me. I was constantly copying/pasting files to the site being developed and the time it took bothered me.

It bothered me that bad that I decided to search for an alternative. The alternative was called XAMPP and it has the possibility to run your development space offline, on your own computer. You would have your own “webserver” that runs MySQL and PHP, which means you can install Wordpress too. That sounded awesome for me!

Installing your offline “webserver”

The program XAMPP was the perfect solution to all my developing adventures. That’s why I would recommend this program for anyone interested in developing Wordpress themes. Let’s install XAMPP.

You should download the latest version from the original site. I run a Windows computer, so I’ve downloaded the Windows version. I guess it doesn’t differ much between other operating systems.

The installation progress shouldn’t be to hard, it is just a normal setup.

Starting your offline “webserver”

Once you’ve installed this program, you have to start the program. You can do that by running the XAMPP.exe file.

To make your webserver run, you have to start the Apache and the MySql modules. PHP has no apart module because it is included in the Apache module. We need to run these particular services to make Wordpress work.

Navigating to Localhost

When you have started these modules, you have started your offline webserver. This means you can navigate to the contents of your webserver from this point. The URL you have to visit is http://localhost/.

You should get redirected to the XAMPP web-based control panel. In this control panel you can find links to Status, PHPMyAdmin, phpinfo() and other services. A services that is of interest of us is PHPMyAdmin.

PHPMyAdmin and MySQL

We need to create a new database to install Wordpress to PHPMyAdmin offers that service. Fortunately, all you need to do is “create a new database” and you are done. In the online versions you need to make users and passwords, but on your localhost, things can stay simple.

If you, for example, have made a database called ‘blog’ you need to remember the following information when installing Wordpress:

Database: blog
User: blog
Password: (no password)
Server: localhost

Installing Wordpress

Finally, we are ready to install Wordpress as we have set up our database and offline connection. First things first, download the most recent version from Wordpress.org. From now on, things are the same as your online version.

You have to extract the Wordpress files to these folder: /XAMPP/htdocs. Remember to use the database information I have given you before.

Once Wordpress is Installed

After you have installed you are ready to go. You can now develop Wordpress themes with the ease of a webserver but it doesn’t cost you much time to constantly upload more recent versions of certain files to see changes.

Now you can just save your files and you see your changes right away. This greatly improves your productivity when developing Wordpress themes. It defenitely did for me.

Please Click Here if you think DivitoDesign is Cool!

My dear sponsor WPWebhost (I will be talking about them more in the future, as I recommend them to any blogger!) has called in many Wordpress blogs from all around the blog-o-sphere to participate in a blog contest. And DivitoDesign would like to win! (and you can win too!)

The people behind WPWebhost are in search of the coolest Wordpress blog and they have a whole bunch of prizes ready for the winners.

Tell us the prizes!

The prizes for this content are fabulous. Check them out:

1st Prize Winner: $500 Cash (via PayPal) + The Unlimited Video Theme Pack from Press75.com worth $295 + 6 Months WooThemes Club Single User Subscription for from WooThemes worth $250 + WP Freedom Plan Life Time Hosting Sponsorship worth $100/year.

WPWebhost will select 20 entries they will think are cool, and then, to make things fair, the public will vote for the winner. You might ask yourself, what is the catch? What do we need to do for this competition?

How can you enter?

Write a blog post participating this competition in your blog.

Get at least 5 comments. (excluding you and the spammers)

Submit your URL in the comment form here. (trackback could work too)

Done! (are you expecting more?)

Simple, right?

That was my thought too. The deadline is 15 November 2008, so hurry up, write your article on your Wordpress blog, submit it to the original article and while your at it, make sure you get to the latest 20 entries!

So, do you think DivitoDesign is cool?

If that is the case, please leave a comment to tell me exactly why you think this blog is cool. It doesn’t matter if I don’t win this competition, but I like to hear what you think about this blog! =)

Oh, and if DivitoDesign wins, there might be a reward for the commentators too.

More and more alternatives for CSS typography are seeing daylight and that is great news for the webdesigner who would like to have some more typography options on the web.

Recently I have written tutorials about the use of sIFR3 and FLIR. Check them out if you like. Today it is time to teach you something about a technique I have just discovered. Today you will learn how to use typeface.js.

Basic information about typeface.js

Typeface.js is a JavaScript library that adds the possibility to choose from fonts that aren’t installed on your visitors’ computer. The JavaScript transform basic HTML and CSS to images with your custom font. Typeface.js is developed by David Chester, and I am sure we will see many more features for typeface.js in the future.

Cross-platform

Something that is really great about this technique is that it works in most browsers like Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 1.5+ and Safari 2+, and if typeface.js is not supported by an older browser, it will degrade gracefully. No problems for the visitor: they will not notice they are missing the fun.

Search Engine Friendly?

One of the most important things about these kind of techniques is the search engine friendliness. If that’s not the case, we aren’t able to use it because it’ll hurt our search engine results.

Fortunately, typeface.js is very search engine friendly. You write just normal HTML and CSS, so the search engine can still know what your content is all about.

Advantages of using Typeface.js

I feel that this technique has many advantages and with some more development this can really turn into the perfect alternative to SIFR3.

Simple to use - The advantage above SIFR3 is that it is more easy to install and use.

Light-weight - You shouldn’t use typeface.js for whole paragraphs, but when you use it for headings or titles, typeface.js loads faster than alternatives like SIFR3 or FLIR.

No flash, No PHP, just JavaScript - The alternatives use PHP or flash to render their text. Typeface.js is only a piece of JavaScript.

Select your text - Although it isn’t as developed as one could wish, the option exists to select and copy text. You just need to select the text as usual and copy and you will have the text copied. The problem with this is that you can’t see what you’ve selected.

Installation to your website

After this introduction it’s about time to start installing and using typeface.js. You need to start with downloading the JavaScript library and place it somewhere in your site. I recommend you make a special folder called js to store all your JavaScript files.

Converting a font

Next we need to convert a TrueType font to a JavaScript file. We can do that by using the converter on the official site. Click here to visit the generator.

Choose your TrueType font file from the /WINDOWS/fonts folder on Windows. In a Mac you can find them here. Please keep in mind that you might not have permission to use every font you have installed, so check that out first. If you have your font converted and downloaded, copy the YOURFONT.typeface.js file in the same folder with your typeface.js.

Tip: If you can’t select your TrueType font from inside the /WINDOWS/fonts folder, try copying your file to another folder.

Implanting Typeface.js in your website

Now our preparation is done and we can start implanting the files into your website.

External CSS file - You will have, most likely, an external stylesheet in place. The next step is implanting the JavaScript files and it is really important to load your external stylesheet before the JavaScript.

Implant your external CSS file like this:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="stylesheet.css">

Implant the JavaScript - Next we will add the typeface.js library and the typeface.js fonts to our site. Here are the codes:

<script src="js/typeface-0.10.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="js/YOURFILE.typeface.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

The YOURFILE.typeface.js is the font you have converted earlier.

Using in your website

Using typeface is very easy, you only have to do some basic HTML and CSS.

<div class="typeface-js" style="font-family: YOURFONT">
Typeface.js will convert these lines of text to YOURFONT.
</div>

You have to add the class typeface-js to the element your text will need to show. If you already used a class on that element, simple add more:

<div class="class another-class typeface-js"></div>

The inline style declarations aren’t the perfect solution, but I guess that will be solved in future versions of the typeface.js library. You should replace YOURFONT with the name of the font you used when converting your TrueType font.

Mission Accomplished

That’s right, that’s all it takes to implant typeface.js in your site or blog.

I have created an example for you and I have did that in 1 minute. It is really that easy! Click here to view my example or here to view the developers example.

Blogging is a business of many aspects. You need to write quality content, promote your content on social media, network with fellow bloggers and if you are interested in monetizing your blog, you need to find advertisers for your blog as well.

If you have your visitors on your blog, you want to keep them and let them browse around. You can do that by improving your blog design. That’s not today’s subject, we will improve the look and feel of your article.

Most important part you should learn from today’s topic is that you keep your reader focused on your content. They shouldn’t be bored.

Make your article look nice too. Photo by Araswami

1. Strong, Italic and Colors

One of the most important parts of webdesign or blog design is contrast. With a proper use of contrast you can draw attention to the parts you want your visitors to see (for example advertisements or your RSS link).

To make certain sentences or words stand out from the rest of your paragraph and content, we can use strong, italic or text with a color.

2. Paragraphs

As we have discussed before, the paragraph is a very important part of your content. The whole article visitors are reading is build on paragraphs.

The important part of your paragraph is that they shouldn’t bore your visitors. If people don’t like how the letters and words “flows” or “feels” they might skip that paragraph, or in the worst case move on and click the exit button. I suggest you read some tips for styling the paragraph.

You also have to make sure you don’t write paragraphs that are too long. You have to keep the attention on what is important. Usually I keep my paragraphs around 4, 5 or maybe 6 sentences, because that is the length myself am most comfortable with.

Paragraphs that are 10+ sentences “feel” like though and hard-to-understand content while if you keep your sentences shorter, it doesn’t feel like that and your visitors read the same amount of text.

3. Images

You are looking, right? photo by Kamoteus.

Using images in your article can make your post easier to read and scan and make it looks nicer. For example, if you align an image inside a paragraph you rebut the focus from the paragraph to the related image.

And if you use an image you should consider adding a caption below to explain what the readers are seeing. That makes it easier to connect the image to the content and that might help the reader to better understand everything that has been said.

4. Whitespace

Whitespace is the most underestimated part of webdesign and that while it has great power: it can make or break a design.

With whitespace you can make the content feel less cluttered and comfortable on the eyes. A very “busy” layout is less easier to read then a layout that adds enough space between elements. I suggest you read this article by A List Apart about whitespace.

5. Titles

Did you take a look at this article? It is separated in chapters, and all these chapters have a title that stands out and makes a structured article. With one fast look your visitor you can see what each chapter is about.

You can achieve a title that works by making the size larger, bolder and you could also add a color. You have to make your title stand out.

Smaller Tips

6. Lists - Organized data is very easy to read for your readers. With lists you can structure information and you can make it look good too.

7. Links - Make it easy for your visitors to see what are links and what are not. Do you remember those default colors? Why do you think the were styled with the colors blue, purple and red? People recognize them as links. You can use some other colors and styles, but remember to let them stand out from the surrounding.

8. Backgrounds - Another way to make some part of your post stand out from the rest. For example, if you have quoted someone you could make visitors look at it by adding a slight darker or lighter color (depending on your layout style).

Important notes

This article is all based on my experience on the web and how I read articles online. Everyone could have their slightly different ways and views and therefore everyone should be able to create an “article-design” that you prefer.

If you follow the basic rules or pointers given in this article you can produce a nice and structured article. Just remember you shouldn’t overdo certain things. Using bold sentences or colors will lower the effect we have been talking about.

After the redesign I have implanted many new tricks and plugins into my Wordpress theme to improve performance, the look and productivity options of my blog.

Other blogs have been writing articles like these too, but I will add a couple that aren’t the usual plugins that you have already implanted.

1. Advanced Excerpt - Because I needed to customize the default excerpt function of Wordpress I decided to give this plugin a go. I can now do everything I want with my excerpts like the number of words, the html characters that are allowed, the ending character and more.

2. DoFollow - There has been numerous discussion going on about the Dofollow. Is it a good step to take with your blog? I think it is, it haven’t increased my spam posts, but it have increased the ‘look-like-real-comments-but-are-spam’ comments. You will get more discussion, and a little more moderation.

3. FD Feedburner Plugin - If you are using Feedburner as your RSS service, you should have this plugin installed. This make sure all the subscribers subscribed to www.yourblog.com/feed/ are redirected to feeds.feedburner.com/yourblog.

4. Feed Pauser - Feed Pauser was exactly what I was looking for. After almost every post I found some small typos in my article but the article was yet send to the RSS feed, I couldn’t change the typos there. With Feed Pauser you can choose to let Wordpress send your post to the RSS feed after a number of minutes so you make sure everything is fine.

5. FV Code Highlighter - If you want to highlight code tags like HTML, CSS, PHP or JavaScript on your Wordpress blog you could use the other plugins out there. This plugin however is developed to give the blogger full control over their codes. You can style everything in this code highlighter!

6. RSS Footer - My fellow Dutchman Joost de Valk know what bloggers need. This RSS footer plugin let you do exactly what its name tell us: add a line of text, a copyright notice or even advertisements after or before each post that is published in your RSS feed.

7. Samsarin PHP Widget - If you want to use widgets for your sidebar, there might be time you need to use PHP to get the functionality you like to have. This “PHP widget” is a an awesome solution as you can choose as many widgets as you like.

8. Search Excerpt - The default search function sucks, we used to sort by date and not by relevance. Fortunately there has been some talking about this and this plugin has been developed to help us.

9. WP Existing Tags - This small plugin adds an existing tags-section to your new post page. This makes it easy to choose a tag for your post and makes sure you don’t make two tags almost identical to each other.

10. Wordpress Download Monitor - If you offer downloads for your visitors it might be nice to know how many times files are downloaded. This awesome plugin does a good job.
